The estate Friedrich Becker in Pfalz produces some beautiful Pinot Noir (or Spätburgunder as they say in Germany). For example, the Spätburgunder « B » is a fantastic wine. The wines are easily available from German retailers and the estate is opened to visits.
In Alko, in Finland, Friedrich Becker offers a entry level wine, designed for export: the Pinot Noir « Becker Family ». Today we are tasting this wine, in the splendid 2013 vintage. This is truely a fantastic vintage for red! I strongly advise to taste some wines and it really is a vintage you can buy almost blind in red.
This Pinot Noir was tasted over three days. At first it was pretty though and dry. Very straightforward, no defect but lacking a bit of everything. The aromas were discrete and the mouthfeel was dominated by acidity. It was not unpleasant but underwhelming. The wine was left at two third of a bottle, in a cool place for 24h.
On the next day, it had beautifully opened. The nose displayed nice touch of fruit and a nice smoky side. A hint of rose and dried flowers too. The mouth is smooth and spicy, with a cherry dominance. The finish is peppery with a note of mint and aromatic herbs. Good lenght and pleasant after taste.
This is a very nice Pinot Noir, quite a good example of German style wines. It absolutely needs breathing so if you can’t open it in advance, decant it at least for an hour. The wine will improve over the next three to five years but is not designed to be cellared a long time.
