The Trebbiano is a very popular white grape variety in Italy because even with a warm climate, it can keep a very high acidity. It is also well known in France under the name Ugni Blanc, but it has the tendency to stay unripe under the French sun. A fun fact: you probably all have already tasted the Trebbiano (Toscano) under an other form and without knowing. Trebbiano aka Ugni blanc is the basic grape used to produce… Cognac! Historically they used to grow Folle Blanche and Colombard, but these two grapes were very sensitive to diseases. After the Phylloxera had wiped out the Cognac vineyards, they replanted it with Ugni blanc which can provide high yields, high acidity and healthy fruit. Everything you can wish for as a Cognac producer.
The particularity of Trebbiano d’Abruzzo from Italy is the very pleasant and balanced aromatic profile alongside a good freshness and decent alcohol levels. All these characteristics make it a perfect match for pasta and pizza. It is also an underestimated grapes and as such, a bargain.
This Zero 2010 by Collefrisio has a very distinctive aromatic profile. It is well balanced with white fruits and a hint of flower. Nothing too much. The mouthfeel is fresh and reasonably long. This is not a big wine but is a very good one. However, I tasted it better a few month ago. This is not a wine to age and I would recommend to buy it only for the next couple of months.
